On the sad demise of my mother - Mrs / Rtn. Shakuntala Verma (05/11/51 - 15/03/24), i would like to dedicate this philanthropic initiative for the elderly community of my hometown - Jamshedpur.
[Idea Origin Credit - Mr. Mahedra Pratap, maternal Uncle]
Owing to this personal tragedy, this time i took the time to meet, connect and spend time with a lot of our old relatives (many 80+), neighbours, friends and social circle of my parents - and i do plan to stay in touch with many of them. But that will not solve the problem that Jamshedpur faces - children leaving the nest early, nuclear families in society & Jamshedpur turning into a not so safe haven for the retired and/ or the elderly...
There is a need for Community Living for the Elderly in Jamshedpur. Lives can be saved, loneliness can be channelised into shared meaning in the last years of one's life.
VISION: Jamshedpur becomes a model city/ safe haven for the retired an elderly living and healthcare in India.
2 Tracks of Development Possibilities:
- GREENFIELD DEVELOPMENT - Land acquisition/ landpooling for fresh new development for shared elderly community living within the city replete with best facilities, sahayaks/ attendants & healthcare/ medical facilities.
- BROWNFIELD DEVELOPMENT - Brownfield reorganisation with colony-wise healthcare, elderly care and CCTV monitoring + sahayaks/ attendants at a community level (healthcare/ medical chowkis like police chowkis of the 1990s can also work) instead of individual level will prove to be more economical and can lead to vibrant eldery communities.
Once it becomes feasible for the elderly to stay in Jamshedpur, healthcare players can invest there. Funding can be raised through TATA CSR, other philanthropic bodies, children from Jamshedpur especially NRIs. AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS for medical threats/ common diseases in the elderly like heart attacks, cancer, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, effects of diabetes & hypertension etc must be run with urgency by organisations like Rotary Club, Lions Club, TMH, JUSCO etc.
It is time back to give back to our parents, ancestors and our hometown and homeland!
